9/20/2023 0 Comments Apple xsan discontinued![]() Not only is Apple offering rackmount options, they are even offering wheels to make it easy to transport (those cheesegraters were heavy). One of the most interesting aspects of the announcement to me were the available accessories. Apple and NVIDIA had a falling out a while ago and it’s unclear at this point whether NVIDIA will be able to make their cards Mac Pro-compatible independently of Apple. NVIDIA cards were conspicuous by their absence, so that will be an issue for anyone relying on CUDA. ![]() The Mac Pro supports the latest AMD graphics cards. Bringing back PCI slots got a round of applause during the keynote for some reason (no-one should applaud the fact they were ever removed), and there are eight of them this time compared to the cheesegrater’s four. Many of us suspected Apple might offer minimal or no expansion, instead requiring users to add devices externally via Thunderbolt. The internals should look very familiar to anyone who opened up an old cheesegrater Mac Pro. The similarities to the old model continue on the inside. The weight is similar to the cheesegrater version. The trashcan Mac Pro was very much form over function and I would certainly trade form for increased function.Īpple products have a reputation for getting thinner and lighter with each iteration but it’s worth noting that the new case is slightly taller and wider than the cheesegrater case, while the depth is about an inch less. While I wouldn’t describe the design as sexy, I doubt many creative professionals care too much about the look of a box that goes under their desk or in a server room. But as many people preferred the older design this is certainly no bad thing. It’s interesting to me that Apple chose to go back to an old design rather than attempting to push the envelope like they tried with the “trashcan” Mac Pro. ![]() Mac Proįrom the outside it looks a lot like the old “cheesegrater” Mac Pros. Today Apple unveiled the new Mac Pro, which is an attempt to woo understandably wary and skeptical creative pros. Once again we are hearing nothing but negativity all based round Final Cut Pro…will we ever see a 64bit version ? I think the tide has turned for FCP and too many people are now abandoning Final Cut in favour of Premiere Pro.Thoughts on the 2019 Mac Pro and Pro Display XDR Looking even further down the line, the report claims that Apple could opt to do away with its Mac OS X Server releases entirely, although the company is still expected to release a server version of Mac OS X Lion later this year.” Xsan and Final Cut server could be among the programs being discontinued, as Apple’s management would be wondering whether to continue to develop and support them in the future. But in a follow-up report today, Hardmac claims that the Xserve discontinuation may only be the beginning of a move by Apple to pare down its storage- and server-focused offerings.Īccording to our sources, the discontinuation of the Xserve by Apple would be only the beginning of an overhaul, which would lead to the disappearance of some professional-orented activities. “Apple’s early November announcement that it will discontinue its Xserve line of rackmountable servers at the end of this month has caused turmoil among the product’s fans, while Steve Jobs has suggested that poor sales were the reason for the decision. It is rumoured that it’s not only Steve Jobbs that’s sick but Apple as a company are looking at abandoning Xsan and Final Cut Server, this will be a substantial blow to Final Cut Users as most pro houses including the BBC use Xserve in a daily basis. ![]()
